Adjustment of Status for Asylees and Refugees


Through the procedure outlined here below, you will be able to obtain Green Card (Adjust Status to Permanent Resident) if you have been a residing in the United States for at least one year in status of a refugee or asylee.

Documentation
(copies, the originals must be available at the time of your interview)

All documents in foreign languages must be translated into English

1) Evidence of Asylee Status (I-94 which is known as White Card issued upon entry to the U.S. or letter granting asylum status)

2) Evidence of year’s physical presence in the U.S. (one of the following: school record, letter of employment, lease agreement, etc.)

3) Birth certificate or other birth record

4) All documentation issued by U.S. authorities: (Driver License, Social Security Card)

5) If you had been absent from the United States since you have been granted asylum, please provide absence record (for example, photocopies of pages in refugee travel document, etc.)

6) If you legally changed your name since you have been granted asylum, please provide name change documentation.

Medical Examination
I-693
Medical Examination Form I-693 should not be submitted with your adjustment of status application I-485.  It will be requested later to be presented at the time of your interview.  

Vaccination "Supplemental Form to I-693."

A complete Form I-693 (which includes the Form I-693 and its supplement) is required only if:

  • there were medical grounds of inadmissibility noted at the time of arrival in the United States or
  • if the refugee status was granted to the alien in the U.S. by an approved Form I-730, Refugee/Asylee Relative Petition.  

If neither of these conditions apply, all that is required is the vaccination supplement.
